The lymphatic system

The lymphatic system
2026-07-14 by ShiatsuPractor-staff

The lymphatic system
is made up of the lymphatic vessels, lymph fluid, lymph nodes, and other organs.

Major roles:
– Immune system: Prevent foreign substances like bacteria from entering the body
– Drainage function: Draining lymph fluid from all over the body.

Lymph nodes
act like a filter.
Lymph fluids are carried to the lymph nodes by lymph vessels. Foreign substances like bacteria are filtered out by lymph nodes. The filtered fluid then returns to the veins, where it re-enters the bloodstream. Lymph nodes also contain immune cells.

Since the lymphatic system has no pump like the heart in the circulatory system, its upward movement depends on the motion of the muscles and joints.
Comparing the speed at which it travels through the entire body, blood takes one minute, whereas lymphatic fluid takes about one day.

When lymphatic flow is impaired, excess fluid that hasn’t been reabsorbed accumulates between cells, resulting in swelling.
In addition to swelling, you may also experience the following symptoms:
– Progression of swelling: Your arms and legs may feel heavy and sluggish, and your shoes may feel tight.
– Weakened immune system: Since the lymphatic system plays a key role in immune function, poor circulation can make you more susceptible to colds and cause symptoms to linger.
– Slowed metabolism: Waste products are not eliminated as easily, which can lead to weight gain and skin problems.

To improve lymphatic flow, moderate exercise and staying hydrated are recommended. Massages such as shiatsu, as well as warming the body to improve blood circulation, also help promote lymphatic flow.

If you persistently experience swollen lymph nodes, consult your doctor.

By applying Shiatsu including the following major lymph nodes, we relieve tension in the areas, improve circulation, and comprehensively restore your overall well-being.
<The major lymph nodes>
Cervical
effective for stiff shoulders, headaches, autonomic disturbances

Subclavicle
below the left collarbone is the terminal of draining. If this area is blocked, waste products are less likely to flow.

Axillary
effective for stiff shoulders, sagging arms, swollen fingers.

Abdominal
effective for constipation, menstrual irregularities

Inguinal
effective for lower internal organ function, menstrual cramps, swelling of the lower body

Popliteal
effective for swollen and cold feet
