April 8th marks Shiatsu Day. In Japanese, “Shi” represents the number four, corresponding to the fourth month of April, while “yatsu” signifies the number eight. This phonetic resemblance gives rise to the term Shiatsu.
The non-profit Japan Shiatsu Association established Shiatsu Day to promote health through this therapy, while also fundraising for the Japanese Red Cross Society.
Additionally, this day coincides with Buddha’s birthday. The essence of maternal love is central to Shiatsu, reflecting Buddha’s teachings on compassion.
Shiatsu therapy continues in the spirit of its founders, who prioritized human well-being above all. The granite hand in the accompanying graphic symbolizes the rich history of Shiatsu, while the flower blooming at the tip of the finger represents the aspirations each of us pursues.
